Whats in a name...
...how much does one's name matter in the long run?
Something to consider: If a child is "strange" and has a "unique" name, it may have more to do with the child's parents being strange, and not exclusively the name.

How accurate...
...are your perceptions of someone, generally speaking, after seeing them somewhere? (you see them, form an opinion, then meet them, you are seeing them BEFORE you meet them) Its like the judging books by their covers thing. You have their typical expression on their face, the clothes they wear, posture, haircut, etc...Give me a percentage.

Sane and healthy or unstable and brilliant?...
...If you were given a choice, and knew you could be a brilliant artist/writer/scientist/songwriter/whatever but it meant you had bouts with depression and anxiety and addiction, or could be totally healthy and overall very sane but could never quite create anything "brilliant", which would it be? (I DO NOT mean to imply that creativity is intrinsically connected with wreckless lifestyles)

Skip this one if you are uncomfortable with death...
...what percentage of death in America occurs in a hospital (if you can find the actual percentage online that's fine, but if not, a guess is just as good)? [after a discussion with EM and friends] PART 2: What percentage of people are in pain when they die in America, what percentage is numb (medicated highly or comatose, etc...) , what percentage overall feels pretty fine? (when you are calculating lets 10 minutes prior to death counts, meaning=if someone previously in good health dies immediately in an accident, they count a feeling good, even if they were in a few moments of pain)

Thursday, August 7, 2008
Another restaurant question...
...if you were given the option of serving yourself when out to eat, would you do so? (You wouldn't have to tip, but obviously no one would wait on you) "Sometimes" is exceptable if you tell me how often.
If you were a cannibal...
...eating cobbler would mean something totally different than it means to non-cannibals (a cobbler being one who does work with shoes). My friend Ross thought of some good ones including eating "Frank and Beans". Can you think of any other items that may be confusing to a cannibal if on a menu? (strange question I know)

Random #3...
...Pretend you are a child, say age 6, would you be more afraid if someone told you there is a giant monster under your bed, or just a monster? Consider that a giant monster isn't as believable because how would it fit under the bed, and yet still...
Random #2...
...Would it be cooler to live in one of those giant bubble cities on the bottom of the ocean or on the moon?
Random #1...
...Would watching Tom Hank's "Castaway" with "Survivorman"'s Les Stroud be cool or annoying? (he is a survival expert, I imagine he would be telling you why things Hank's character does would not really work, but also what to do instead)

Ultimate band...
...put together musicians to create your ideal band. You are allowed to choose 4-5 members for this band and none of them are allowed to have previously been in the same band. Also, you can pull them from any year of their career/life (which is especially important for someone you may be considering who is deceased). Who would it be?

...when you are passing someone and say "hey, how are you?" and they say something like "whats going on?" and never answer your question? or is that acceptable in that situation? lets say you see the person every few days and are somewhere between acquaintance and friend.
Thursday, April 10, 2008

Who is more comfortable...
...in his own shoes, the 75 year old man who has finally figured out what kind of shoes he is wearing and how to wear them comfortably, or the 4 year old boy who hasn't yet realized he is wearing shoes?
note: this is not a gender specific question though I have chosen to write it in the masculine.
note 2: "Shoes" are in fact being used here as a metaphor- just to clear up any confusion.

Nature vs. nurture....
...in reference to personality, what percentage of someone's showing characteristics are due to the environment they were raised in versus the way they were born? Does that percentage alter when we discuss other aspects of personality? Does it change when a subject is in differing environments? Does one's comfortability change that percentage? Are my questions clear enough?

Does it seem...
...that supervillians are usually more interesting and complex than superheros? In general, do they seem to be more powerful individuals?
Would this blog...
me more enjoyable to visit with more pictures? What other improvements could be made here?
Capitalism, like it or not...
..At a time when many "environmentalist" would say that the gov't of these United States has not taken this global warming threat seriously, or to say the least has set unambitious/lackadaisical goals for moving to alternative energy, there is a clear trend in the consumer's market for buying more energy efficient and environmentally friendly products. Obviously much of this is due to inflated gas prices, but this consumer trend seems to be forcing industry into change faster than government regulations, and at least some of that seems due to reasons other than expensive gas. So my questions are: Does capitalism work for the good of the people the majority of the time? How about for the majority of the people? Can anyone can think of other examples of this kind of change (you can include consumers boycotting specific goods, but I would specifically like to hear examples of the market trends pushing for change)? Experiences many of you have in other countries may be relevant also.
(I realize many of you may think the consumer wave is not pushing for a fast enough change, but answer the question for what it is if possible)

Heres a classic...
...if you were stuck on an island and could bring one writers entire catalog, who would bring bring? lets say you will be on the island for the next 25 years. also consider what type of literature you will be in the mood for on an island.
(something else you can respond to, in regards to the question "if you could bring one cd with you on an island...", do most people simply not think about the fact that there will not be any power source on the island, or are people assuming there is a lifetime supply of batteries, or do people assume they are on a civilized island but they only get one cd?)
(also it is everything I have not to ask a LOST question while on the island scenario questions)

In the spirit of March Madness...
...you may have witnessed the FOX television event "Kobayashi vs the Bear" in a hot dog eating contest. if not you can watch that Here . It is as it sounds, Kobayashi, the greatest hot dog eating champion of perhaps all time, went against a hungry bear in a hot dog eating contest. While it was closer than it should've been, the bear did win, but it makes me wonder, if Kobayashi had won, would that have been the greatest upset of all time? If not, what is? (consider "David v. Goliath", or "John Henry v. the machine", "Davidson v. Georgetown",etc...)

What is the biggest reason....
...that more people don't watch PBS's New Hour? lack of flashy graphics, slower pace/ too much time spent on each issue, lack of commercial breaks, choice of stories, Jim Lehrer and the cast?
Opinion...
...do owls and other animals that see well in the dark sleep as well as animals that don't have that gift? It must be like the lights are on all the time right? Are they perhaps more uneasy because they can always see whats going on? Is that why so many of them are nocturnal?????
