As for fashion...

...do most people dress themselves predominately as a means for personal expression or as a way to maximize cultural appearance?

In this country (USA), I say "personal expression," except that personal expression for our fellow citizens of the main stream variety has a lot to do with adhering to the cultural norm around here, which could be your definition of "cultural appearance," but I'm not sure.
