I think I come down on the side of the playoff on this one. For one, it prevents a situation where someone who has gone undefeated misses out on playing for the nation championship (a little biased here, yes).
There is the argument against which says that every game is a playoff game right now, but even so, teams can lose one game and be in the BCS title race (take Florida for example). Plus, teams that lose early always come out better than teams that lose at the end of the season which I think is kind of bogus.
Sure, someone is still left out of a playoff (the number 9 team or number 5 team or whatever), but I still think it's an improvement.
I may be in favor of a four team playoff rather than an eight team playoff, though. That would maintain the drama of the regular season (still extremely difficult to get in) but yet might lead to the top two teams actually playing each other. I need to think about that some more.
