You have an empty front porch...

...and enough money to buy either a hammock, a rocking chair, or a two person swing, which one do you purchase?

rocker, no doubt.

Haha. Drew. You would.

Augh. Tough for me. Honestly I love rockers. But I LOVE swings and I LOVE hammocks. Get the difference?

I like the factor of it being a two person swing. I would love to have just a little swing on a tree off the porch. But it's nice to be able to share the swing. Rockers are a one person thing.

Now the hammock is more open. It is a camping hammock or one of those traditional rope hammocks or a canvas hammock or what?

Hmmm....I'd go big-enough-for-two hammock. It's share-able, but not awkward if you want to lay in it by yourself (cause let's be honest...two person swing is hard to balance with just you in it). Plus it swings, plus you can nap in it.

Although the swing and the rocker both give the picture of homey comfort.

Hmm...no...hammock.

my vote is for a two person rocker, because it would still be fun even if you are alone. however, I do appreciate rachel's reasoning for the hammock.

I'm quite torn. My love of rocking chairs is known.

However, I feel inclined to invest in the swing for the sake of a visitor -- having only one place to sit does not seem inviting (assuming I have no other old chairs)

Ellen and Drew, do you guys intend to only sit on your porch alone? Or is one person on the floor / railing? Curious how the situation in handled...

hammock. definitely hammock. i can fall asleep immediately in a hammock. it has to be just right though - not too tough of rope, good cushions. as cocoon-like as possible.

Speakman,
I would have no problem with either floor or railing, and in fact sometimes may choose one or the other even if a rocker was present. However, I think everyone is seriously missing the fact that there can be more than one rocker on a porch at one time and that's a fact. I've seen some porches with two rockers and many with even four and lets not forget what potential the Cracker Barrel has exposed us to.

My friend Stockstill, I completely agree that a porch can, and in fact should, have more than one rocker. And if there is more than one rocker present, I am a full supporter of that option.

That said, the question is presenting a situation where you have an empty porch and enough money to buy one item. Granted, we could assume that you eventually can add to that item, I guess. But as posed, I don't think the multi-rocker option is a true option.

I agree that the floor / railing is a live option. I didn't mean to dismiss it. I was just curious if that is how you are going to deal with company (if you want company, that is)
