lightning!
Simply because of the mystery involved. The unpredictable nature of lightning strikes. I mean volcanos can be unpredictable, but for the large part you know where they will erupt and where they will damage.
Not to mention the mystery of ball lightning!

lightning! It's watching particles jump! It's electricity! It's watching a science that normally happens on an unobservable level!
Plus it's purty!
Volcanoes are just hot death traps! And it's like stuff that's supposed to be way down below your feet in a safe place suddenly exploding out and killing everyone!

lightning b.c as we all learned in "sweet home alabama" (blair, i know you watched this movie 12,457 times, you southern boy) lightning turns sand into a really cool glass.
of course, volcanic lava preserves stuff for thousands of years, but whatever.
