Without doing research...

...can you tell me why the base of the fingernail (the lunula) is whiter than the nail plate? If yes, why? If not, take a guess.

because it isn't attached to the nail bed/skin (I think these are basically the same thing) yet. I know this because I recently went to the doctor because I thought that I had some fungus on my big toes (which may be why I wash my feet with such fervor), but the doctor said I didn't have a fungus and that my toes have experienced trauma which caused the nail to separate.

My guess is it has something do to with circulation. Press down on the nail plate and it turns white too.

I dunno, though.

Have you noticed you don't really have one on your pinkies?
